Two people were killed and six others injured after gunmen attacked a vehicle conveying Fulani herders in Plateau State on Sunday evening.
The incident occurred at about 5:30pm around Tota Filling Station, Yelwa Club Junction, Bukuru, in Jos South Local Government Area of the state.
The victims were reportedly returning to Bassa Local Government Area after conducting business at the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market when the attackers opened fire on their vehicle.
The Plateau State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, confirmed the attack in Jos, describing it as unprovoked and disturbing.
Babayo said the injured victims had been taken to a hospital for treatment, while one person remained missing following the attack.
He called on security agencies to intensify efforts to identify and arrest those responsible, urging that the perpetrators be brought to justice.
The latest incident occurred less than two weeks after another attack on Fulani herders in the state.
According to the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, five Fulani herders were killed on September 20, 2026, around Kassa community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area while returning from the same livestock market. One other person was reportedly injured in the attack.
MACBAN also recalled that Fulani herders were attacked near the Conoil Filling Station in December 2025 while returning from the Kara Bukuru market.
In a statement issued after Sunday’s incident, the association expressed concern over what it described as a recurring pattern of attacks on herders using the route.
The association said the latest attack had heightened fears among pastoralists and traders who depend on the market for their livelihoods.
It said, “This unfortunate incident is deeply disturbing and represents yet another attack against innocent herders who were peacefully returning from their lawful business activities.”
MACBAN condemned attacks targeting people because of their ethnicity or occupation and called for increased security along the Kara Bukuru market route.
The association urged the Plateau State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, Operation Safe Haven, the Department of State Services and other relevant security agencies to strengthen surveillance and take preventive measures to avert further attacks.
It also appealed to its members to remain calm and law-abiding and refrain from retaliatory attacks.
“We have confidence that the security agencies will carry out a professional investigation and ensure that justice is served,” MACBAN said.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful coexistence with communities across Plateau State, saying lasting peace could only be achieved through justice, fairness and equal protection for all citizens.
As of the time of filing this report, the spokespersons for Operation Enduring Peace and the Plateau State Police Command, Captain Polycarp Oteh and SP Alabo Alfred, respectively, had not responded to inquiries concerning the incident.
