Abba Kyari: An officer’s fall from grace to disgrace

Alhaji Abba Kyari, once celebrated as a distinguished officer in the Nigeria Police Force, has seen his reputation marred by a series of serious allegations and legal challenges. From being the shining star of the force, Kyari has fallen to the cesspool of everything that is wrong with the law enforcement force.

Early Career and Rise to Prominence

Born on March 17, 1975, in Maiduguri, Borno State, Kyari joined the Nigeria Police Force in 2000. He quickly rose through the ranks, earning commendations for his role in high-profile criminal investigations. His leadership of the Inspector General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team (IGP-IRT) brought him national recognition, particularly for his efforts in combating kidnapping and armed robbery.

Buoyed by the strings of successes he and his team recorded, his name became part of discussions on vibrant young candidates for the highest police office in the land – Inspector General of Police. His face graced newspapers and tabloids alike, TV and Youtube channels. He was the police officer that the fastidious Nigerian public loved.

Then came the crash. From his dizzy height, he came crashing down like the proverbial Icarus.

    Allegations of Corruption and Misconduct

Kyari’s career took a downturn following multiple allegations of corruption and misconduct:

    • Involvement in International Fraud: In July 2021, U.S. authorities indicted Kyari for allegedly collaborating with Nigerian fraudster Ramon Abbas, known as Hushpuppi. Abbas, who like Abba, enjoyed a sizzling fame as Instagram enforcer and social media celebrity, is currently cooling his heels in a US prison. Court documents allege that Kyari facilitated the arrest of a rival at Abbas’s behest and received payment for this service. This led to his suspension from the police force pending investigation.
    • Accusations of Extortion: In 2020, businessman Afeez Mojeed accused Kyari of unlawfully detaining him and extorting over N41 million. Mojeed claimed that Kyari’s team seized his properties and forced him to make bank transfers under duress.
    • Drug Trafficking Allegations: In February 2022, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) declared Kyari wanted for his alleged involvement in a cocaine trafficking scheme. He was accused of negotiating the release of 25 kilograms of seized cocaine and offering a bribe of $61,400. Kyari and four other police officers were arraigned on multiple charges, including conspiracy and obstruction, to which they pleaded not guilty.

    Legal Proceedings and Current Status

In April 2025, the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed the no-case submissions filed by Kyari and his co-defendants, ruling that the prosecution had established a prima facie case. Justice Emeka Nwite ordered all defendants to enter their defense, with proceedings adjourned to May 21, 2025.

Kyari’s legal troubles have not only tarnished his once-stellar career but have also sparked broader discussions about corruption and accountability within Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies.
