At least three people, including a three-year-old child, have been killed after suspected armed herdsmen attacked Omulonye community in Ugboju Icho, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The attackers reportedly stormed the community on Wednesday evening, leaving several residents injured, with the victims receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Otukpo.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged that the assailants were armed herdsmen who had repeatedly terrorised the area.
“Three were killed by armed herdsmen terrorising the area in recent times. A three-year-old child was among the victims. Others were injured and receiving medical treatment in Otukpo,” the eyewitness said.
The spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Peter Orchia Aondongu, confirmed the killings.
“Yes, I can confirm to you that three were killed in one of the communities in Ugboju, Otukpo Local Government Area,” he said.
The latest attack adds to growing security concerns in Otukpo and other parts of Benue State, where communities have suffered repeated attacks by suspected armed groups.
In July, separate attacks on communities in Otukpo Local Government Area left several people dead and others injured, prompting renewed calls for stronger security measures to protect residents.
The latest incident has further heightened concerns over the safety of rural communities, particularly women and children, amid recurring violence in the state.
