Gunmen have abducted a primary school teacher, Mrs Amina Hussaini, from her residence in Kuru community, Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, and demanded N50 million for her release.
The victim was reportedly kidnapped on Tuesday while her husband was away in Lafia, the state capital, on an official assignment.
A family member, Suwaiba Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident during a telephone conversation with our reporter on Thursday, said the abducted teacher works at an LEA Primary School in Kuru.
According to Abdullahi, the kidnappers contacted the family shortly after the abduction and demanded N50 million as ransom for her freedom.
She said the family had been thrown into confusion over how to raise the huge amount, adding that efforts to negotiate a reduction in the ransom had so far proved unsuccessful.
Abdullahi explained that when a relative, who had volunteered to mediate, attempted to persuade the kidnappers to lower their demand, the abductors abruptly terminated the telephone conversation.
She disclosed that Hussaini was still being held captive, while the family had continued to appeal to members of the public for financial assistance to secure her release.
The incident has reportedly been reported to the police.
The family member appealed to the Nasarawa State Government, security agencies and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene and ensure the teacher’s safe and unconditional release.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Nasarawa State Police Command, SP Ramhan Nansel, said he had also come across reports of the abduction on social media.
Nansel, however, said he would make enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident before providing further information.
