Suspected Mamudawa/Lakurawa terrorists have reportedly killed a police inspector and 11 civilians in separate attacks on Waiwayi and Kystu villages in Koko/Besse Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the incident, disclosing that the inspector was killed during a gun battle with the attackers.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, confirmed the development during a telephone conversation, adding that the officer’s identity had yet to be released pending the conclusion of investigations.
“Yes, there was an attack on the villages of Waiwayi and Kystu by suspected Mamudawa, and unfortunately, during an exchange of fire, they killed one police inspector. I can’t give you his name yet till we finish investigation,” Usman said.
The attackers were also reported to have set houses on fire and looted food items from shops in the affected communities, worsening the situation for residents.
Following the attacks, surviving villagers reportedly fled their homes to seek refuge in safer locations amid fears of further violence.
Usman said police operatives and other security agencies had cordoned off the affected areas to prevent additional attacks and protect residents.
He added that security personnel had launched a manhunt to track down and arrest those responsible for the killings.
The incident adds to growing security concerns in parts of Kebbi State, where attacks on rural communities have continued to threaten lives, property and livelihoods.
Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the incident as security operatives work to apprehend the assailants.
