The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has clarified that its N66 per litre petrol discount, recently extended until October 31, 2026, is a customer relief initiative and does not represent a return to the fuel subsidy regime.
The company’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, disclosed this on Friday, confirming that the discount would continue at NNPC Retail stations nationwide until the end of October.
The promotion was initially introduced to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, with the N66 reduction reflecting the country’s 66 years of independence.
The offer, which began on October 1, was originally scheduled to run for seven days, ending on October 7. However, the company subsequently extended the promotion to enable more customers to benefit from the price reduction.
Under the arrangement, motorists purchasing petrol at participating NNPC Retail outlets are entitled to a discount of N66 per litre, provided payment is made through the NNPC Fuel App.
NNPC Limited said the initiative was designed to provide relief to consumers amid elevated global crude oil prices, which the company linked partly to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The clarification follows remarks by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, who explained that the discount was not funded by the Federal Government.
Oyedele stated that the price reduction was being financed from NNPC Retail’s own commercial margin rather than money from the Federation Account.
NNPC Limited consequently urged Nigerians to disregard suggestions that the initiative amounted to a restoration of petrol subsidy, stressing that the discount was a commercial decision aimed at supporting customers.
The company also emphasised that the offer was limited to its retail outlets and did not automatically extend to filling stations operated by independent petroleum marketers.
It reiterated its commitment to maintaining a reliable fuel supply and ensuring commercially responsible operations while introducing initiatives to ease the burden on consumers.
NNPC Limited added that it would continue to communicate the terms and duration of its customer-focused programmes to keep Nigerians informed.
