Apostle Sam Adegoke, founder of Elijah Generation Church in Akure, Ondo State, has apologised to women he had sexual relationships with before his marriage, admitting that he regrets his past conduct.
The cleric, who recently got married, made the disclosure in a statement issued on Monday, saying he had temporarily withdrawn from public ministry and social media to reflect on his actions and seek counsel.
Adegoke said his decision to step back was part of an effort to take responsibility for his past, make amends and subject himself to appropriate accountability.
He acknowledged that although the relationships occurred before his marriage, his conduct was inconsistent with the standards expected of him as a Christian and minister.
“Before I was married, I was involved in sexual relationships with women that I deeply regret. Although these events occurred before my marriage, I acknowledge that my actions were wrong and fell short of the standards of holiness, integrity, and self-control I am called to uphold as a Christian and minister of the Gospel,” he said.
The pastor said he was not attempting to justify his actions because they happened before his marriage, adding that he had been seeking spiritual guidance and undergoing pastoral and professional counselling.
He expressed regret to the women involved, saying they may have suffered hurt or disappointment as a result of his conduct.
“I take full responsibility for my actions and sincerely apologise to the women involved for any hurt, disappointment, or harm I may have caused,” Adegoke stated.
He also apologised to his wife, family, church members, colleagues and others who had placed their trust in him as a spiritual leader.
According to the cleric, his period away from public ministry would allow him to confront the issues surrounding his past and work towards genuine behavioural change.
He said true repentance required more than words, noting that it must be accompanied by changed conduct, accountability and a willingness to accept the consequences of one’s actions.
“I will therefore continue to submit myself to appropriate spiritual, pastoral, and professional accountability throughout this process,” he said.
Adegoke further appealed to members of the public to pray for him, particularly for the strength to confront his past honestly and make amends where necessary.
“I ask for prayer, not that my actions would be excused, but that I would have the humility and courage to face them honestly, make amends where appropriate, protect those affected, and allow God to produce genuine transformation in my life,” he said.
He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to rebuilding his conduct around greater integrity and accountability.
“I am deeply sorry and remain committed to walking forward with greater integrity, responsibility, and accountability,” he added.
Meanwhile, Adegoke and his wife have reportedly disabled comments on their respective Instagram accounts following the disclosure.
