Operatives of the Kano State Police Command have arrested a woman, Bilkisu Sani, in connection with the death of her husband, Hafizu Gausu, in Rogo Local Government Area of Kano State.
Gausu reportedly died on Friday evening following an altercation at his residence, amid allegations that his intention to take a second wife had caused persistent disagreements between the couple.
A resident of the area, Auwal Kazagi Rogo, who spoke about the incident, said the deceased’s wife raised an alarm at about 7pm, claiming that her husband had been slaughtered.
Kazagi, however, said residents who rushed to the scene found Gausu lying in a pool of blood with an injury to his head.
“On reaching there, we saw that he was not slaughtered but hit on the head with an object. He fell in blood and died. There was even a sign of bite on his ear,” he said.
Following the incident, residents reportedly alerted the police, who arrived at the scene and took the deceased’s body away as part of their investigation.
Sources in the community said the dispute between the couple was linked to Gausu’s reported plan to marry another woman as his second wife.
According to the sources, Gausu had already become engaged to the woman and was making preparations for the marriage, a development that allegedly angered Bilkisu.
The disagreement reportedly became a recurring issue in the marriage, with Bilkisu allegedly making it clear that she would oppose the proposed union.
Efforts by community elders to settle the matter were said to have failed to permanently resolve the disagreement between the couple.
It was further alleged that Gausu had asked the family of his fiancée to move the wedding date forward by two months because of the opposition he was facing from his first wife.
Following the man’s death, the police reportedly took Bilkisu into custody as a prime suspect while investigations continued to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the exact cause of Gausu’s death.
Gausu and Bilkisu were said to have been married for about seven years and had two children together. Bilkisu is also reportedly pregnant with the deceased’s child.
The deceased was buried on Saturday morning in Rogo according to Islamic rites.
The circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation.
