Obi, Kwankwaso to unveil new political platform Monday — Galadima

The Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Buba Galadima, has hinted at an imminent political realignment, revealing that key opposition figures, including former Peter Obi and former Rabiu Kwankwaso, will unveil a new political platform on Monday.

Galadima disclosed on Saturday during a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement in Abuja, amid growing uncertainty over the future of opposition alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Although Galadima did not disclose the name of the platform, sources close to the opposition leaders said Obi and Kwankwaso were finalising arrangements to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress, a newly floated political party reportedly linked to former Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson.

A source within the camp of the opposition leaders, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said both leaders and their political associates had been engaged in consultations and documentation with Dickson and leaders of the new platform.

“Both Obi, Kwankwaso, and their chieftains were on the ground between yesterday and this morning, signing the relevant documents with Senator Dickson and the NDC leaders.

“We don’t want a repeat of what happened in the ADC to occur again. We discovered late that Atiku and his loyalists lured our leaders to that opposition party to fulfil only one single mission – Atiku’s presidential ambition.

“All is now set. Both Obi and Kwankwaso will announce their defection from the ADC on Monday,” the source said.

The planned move follows weeks of speculation over the political future of the two opposition figures, particularly after recent legal and internal developments affecting opposition parties.

Addressing journalists at the event, Galadima warned supporters to brace for what he described as coordinated attacks and attempts to discredit the alliance once the platform is officially unveiled.

“As from Monday, when our leaders declare on which platform they will run, I want to tell you that one of two things will happen,” he said.

“First, they will sponsor columnists. Two, they will deploy social media influencers to start attacking our candidates. For all of you who are on social media and those with the mighty pen, you must be prepared to respond to anything they are going to say.”

The NNPP chieftain also alleged that opposition leaders had faced sustained repression, claiming some political actors had been maligned and opposition platforms weakened ahead of the 2027 elections.

Also speaking at the gathering, Isaac Fayose expressed support for the proposed alliance, while activist Aisha Yesufu called on Nigerians to embrace unity beyond ethnic and regional divisions.
