A final-year student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Oluwole Oluwasegun, has reportedly died by suicide at his off-campus residence.
Oluwasegun, a student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, reportedly died on Tuesday afternoon at his residence around the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Olarewaju Abiodun, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.
According to Abiodun, the university management received information about the incident on Tuesday afternoon and immediately deployed its Quick Response and Security Team to the scene.
He said the Nigeria Police was also contacted, with officers from the ‘A’ Division, Moore, Ile-Ife, joining the university security personnel at the residence.
Abiodun said the student was subsequently taken to the university’s Health Centre, where a medical doctor certified him dead.
He said the university, concerned about the circumstances surrounding the student’s death, handed relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police for further investigation.
The police have since commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The university also notified the appropriate student affairs authorities to facilitate necessary follow-up, particularly regarding the welfare and emotional support of students affected by the incident.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, classmates and colleagues.
The institution also urged students experiencing severe emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures or other personal challenges to seek help promptly from trusted individuals and appropriate university support structures.
Bamire reaffirmed the university management’s commitment to the welfare of its staff and students, stressing that no student should feel compelled to confront overwhelming difficulties alone.
