The Cross River State Police Command has launched a manhunt for an unidentified male guest after a woman was found dead in a hotel room in Calabar South.

The woman, whose identity has not been established, was discovered unresponsive in Room 2 of a hotel on Clifford Street at about 8 a.m. on Tuesday, September 8.

Police said preliminary investigation showed that the man checked into the room with the deceased at about 8 p.m. the previous day but was allegedly not properly documented by the hotel.

The receptionist reportedly entered the room after noticing that its door was open and assuming the occupants had checked out. She then found the woman lying unresponsive on the bed.

Investigators who visited the scene observed apparent marks of violence on the woman’s face and neck.

Her remains were evacuated to General Hospital, Calabar, where she was confirmed dead and deposited at the mortuary pending further investigation and possible forensic examination.

Police also recovered tablets from her handbag but said no link had been established between the medication and her death.

The receptionist has been taken into custody for questioning as investigators work to establish what happened and trace the male guest.

The Commissioner of Police, Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, directed that the investigation be conducted professionally and objectively, saying it would establish the identity of the deceased, the cause of death and the circumstances surrounding the incident.Ordue assured that anyone found culpable would be dealt with according to the law.The Command urged the public to avoid speculation and the circulation of unverified information, while appealing for credible information that could help identify the deceased or locate the male guest.
