*Jeff Bezos-Lauren Sanchez’s Wedding: Celebrities, Superyachts, Protests Rock the Floating City of Venice **Amazon Boss’s $500m super yacht on standby ***US’s First Lady, Oprah Winfrey, Mick Jagger, Orlando Bloom, others storm Venice

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez are officially tying the knot in Venice this week, and the world is watching as the Amazon founder and Emmy-winning journalist turn the historic city into a billionaire’s wedding stage. But as the superyachts sail in and the celebrity guest list expands, locals and activists are pushing back against what they call the privatisation of one of the world’s most fragile and treasured UNESCO heritage sites.

The multi-day celebration is set to begin on Thursday and conclude Saturday with a secret wedding ceremony—reportedly at one of two iconic locations: the historic Church of the Abbey of Misericordia or the Arsenale, a centuries-old Venetian shipyard. While the venue remains unconfirmed, security around the event is extremely tight.

Bezos, 61, and Sánchez, 55, are said to have invited around 200 high-profile guests. Names rumored to be attending include Leonardo DiCaprio, Kim Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey, Mick Jagger, Orlando Bloom, and Ivanka Trump. With Venice’s finest five-star hotels completely booked out and gondolas chartered for the festivities, the floating city is preparing for a high-octane celebration.

Adding to the spectacle, at least 95 private jets have reportedly requested landing access at Venice’s Marco Polo airport, according to Corriere della Sera. Dozens of luxury superyachts are expected to dock in the Venetian lagoon, offering sea-bound accommodations and event venues for the rich and famous.

Lauren Sánchez is also expected to wear up to 27 outfits throughout the weekend, including a show-stopping custom gown by Oscar de la Renta. Bezos’s $500 million yacht, Koru, is currently anchored nearby and believed to be hosting pre-wedding events and private receptions.

However, the lavish nuptials have sparked a wave of criticism. Protesters from environmental groups and local activists argue that Venice is “no billionaire’s playground.” Demonstrations this week have featured signs that read, “If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more taxes.” Greenpeace has also joined the protests, raising concerns over the environmental footprint of hosting such a large-scale private event in a city already strained by overtourism and climate threats.

City officials defend the event, saying it will bring an estimated €20–30 million to the local economy. They have denied rumors of widespread disruptions and emphasized that the wedding is a private event involving only 200–250 guests. Still, the optics of a tech mogul taking over Venice for a wedding extravaganza have not gone unnoticed.

With superyachts lining the canals, private planes circling overhead, and celebrities descending on Venice, the Jeff Bezos–Lauren Sanchez wedding is already being hailed as the most extravagant—and controversial—celebrity wedding of the year.

As Bezos and Sánchez prepare to say, “I do,” the world watches, divided between admiration and alarm. One thing is clear: Venice has never seen a wedding quite like this.
