A domestic dispute has claimed the lives of a couple in Agbarho community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, after a man allegedly dismembered his wife before taking his own life by consuming a poisonous substance.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred on Owiri Street in Agbarho, leaving the couple’s four children without their parents.
A source familiar with the incident said the man allegedly became enraged over claims that his wife was unfaithful and had sold his landed property.
A neighbour in the area disclosed that the couple had a history of repeated physical confrontations before the incident that resulted in their deaths.
The deceased man’s elder brother also expressed grief over the development, saying he had limited knowledge of the circumstances that led to the fatal altercation.
He, however, noted that disagreements between couples could arise from various issues.
According to him, the couple had four children, with their eldest son aged about 21 years.
The bereaved family member declined to reveal the identities of his late brother and sister-in-law.
Meanwhile, a senior police officer at the Agbarho Division, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident.
The officer said the police evacuated the bodies to a morgue after receiving information about the tragedy, adding that investigations would be conducted to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
He also disclosed that neither of the families had lodged an official complaint with the police as of the time of the report.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Delta State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, were unsuccessful, as calls to him were not answered before the report was filed.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, with the police expected to investigate the events that led to the deaths of the couple.
