The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has opened an investigation into the suspected murder of a 45-year-old man who was found dead in a pool of blood while sleeping with his family inside a church.

In a statement issued Wednesday in Uyo, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Timfon John confirmed the incident, which occurred at about 12:10 a.m. on Tuesday in Ikot Oku Usung village, Ukanafun Local Government Area.

According to John, preliminary findings revealed that the victim, identified as Mr. Udeme Uko, was asleep with his wife and children in the church when a gunshot was heard. He was later discovered with a gunshot wound to the head, raising suspicions of suicide or a possible targeted attack.

“Concerned residents alerted the command after receiving a report from the victim’s wife. Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene, where a locally made pistol was recovered,” John stated.

The victim’s body has been deposited at the morgue for autopsy and further examination.

The state Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, has ordered a thorough and expedited investigation, vowing that all necessary resources will be deployed to apprehend those behind the crime.
