The Progressive Governors Forum has drawn a clear line against political alliances outside the All Progressives Congress, declaring that its members will not support any candidate or coalition that could weaken the party or threaten President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

The position, announced by the forum’s Chairman and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, followed a closed-door meeting of APC governors in Abuja on Monday night.

The declaration is coming amid growing political realignments around the Rainbow Coalition championed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, a PDP member who has been mobilising politicians across party lines in support of Tinubu’s second-term bid.

Although Wike has repeatedly maintained that the coalition is designed to secure Tinubu’s re-election, the emergence of political structures outside the APC has unsettled some party stakeholders, who fear competing loyalties could weaken the ruling party ahead of the polls.

Uzodimma said the governors had unanimously agreed to work only with candidates flying the APC flag and would reject any arrangement capable of undermining the party or its candidates.

“The forum has no intention to support any candidate at any level that is not an APC candidate because our candidates who are contesting the election are being sponsored by our party,” he said.

He added that APC governors would take charge of the party’s campaign structures in their respective states and align their activities with Tinubu’s re-election strategy.

“The APC Governors Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels,” Uzodimma stated.

The governors’ stance is significant against the backdrop of the widening influence of Wike’s coalition, which has attracted politicians from different parties and triggered fresh calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The political realignment has generated tensions in several states, including Rivers, Kwara, Gombe and Cross River, where politicians and party blocs are weighing competing interests ahead of the presidential contest.

Wike, who has remained a PDP member despite his appointment by Tinubu, has continued to defend the coalition as a platform aimed at ensuring the President’s victory in 2027.

However, the APC governors’ latest resolution signals that, regardless of individual political alliances, the party’s governors intend to deploy their official structures behind APC candidates and Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

With the 2027 contest gradually taking shape, the development could intensify the battle over political structures and influence as rival blocs seek to consolidate support ahead of the elections.
