The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Edo State Command, has arrested a 24-year-old suspect over an alleged internet fraud linked to a fake online vehicle purchase worth more than N3 million.

The Edo State Commandant of the corps, Saidi Akintayo, disclosed this during a news conference in Benin City on Monday.

Akintayo said the case was reported on February 3 by the complainant, Olanrewaju Nurudeen, a resident of Aduwawa in Benin City, who attempted to purchase a 2010 Toyota Corolla through a United States-based car auction website.

According to him, the victim unknowingly transferred N3,005,000 into an Access Bank account belonging to one Oluwafunmilayo Olubode after the online platform was allegedly compromised by fraudsters.

The commandant said he immediately directed the command’s investigative team to track down those involved in the fraud after receiving the complaint.

He explained that investigators obtained a court order to access the account details linked to the transaction, leading to the arrest of one Momoh Rabiu from Auchi in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.

Akintayo said the suspect confessed that his bank account was used by a friend identified as “Destiny Money,” who is currently on the run, to receive the fraudulent funds.

He added that the suspect admitted receiving N277,000 as his share from the proceeds of the alleged fraud.

The NSCDC boss said efforts were ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect, while investigations into the matter would continue.

“At the conclusion of investigation, the suspect will be charged to court,” Akintayo said.

He reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling cybercrime and other criminal activities in the state.
