A suspected bandit attack on Odo-Ere, the headquarters of Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, has claimed the life of a member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), while his daughter, who was abducted during the incident, has reportedly escaped and reunited with her family.
Sources in the community identified the deceased officer as Mr Ayo, who was allegedly shot in the head by the attackers during the invasion on Monday.
According to residents, the NSCDC officer was rushed to a medical facility after the attack but was confirmed dead on arrival. His remains were subsequently deposited in a mortuary.
The attackers were also said to have abducted Mr Ayo’s first daughter before fleeing into the bush, sparking fears and anxiety among residents already concerned about security challenges in the area.
However, relief came to the community after reports emerged that the abducted woman escaped from her captors in the early hours of Tuesday and returned home unharmed.
The development was met with widespread jubilation among residents.
Confirming the incident, a community source said, “Mr Ayo, who was shot in the head, died instantly while the daughter was whisked away into the bush. However, luck smiled at the daughter as she managed to escape from the bandits’ hideout and has since been reunited with the family.”
Security agencies have reportedly launched an investigation into the attack.
A police source disclosed that tactical teams have commenced a manhunt for the perpetrators, adding that efforts are underway to track down and apprehend those responsible for the killing and abduction.
The latest incident has heightened concerns over security in the area, with residents calling for increased protection to prevent further attacks.
