President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away earlier today in London at approximately 4:30 p.m. following a prolonged illness.

In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on
Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday, President Tinubu expressed his deep condolences to the Buhari family and confirmed he had spoken personally with Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the widow of the late former president.

As part of arrangements to bring the former leader’s body back home, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom immediately to accompany the remains of the former president back to Nigeria.

In honour of the late statesman, President Tinubu has also ordered all national flags to be flown at half-staff across the country.

Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, after winning two consecutive terms in office. Before that, he held power as military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985.

Further details regarding funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
