The Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources has announced stricter enforcement of environmental laws beginning July 1. Offenders could face a fine of up to N250,000 or up to three months’ imprisonment for violations such as illegal waste dumping, street littering, and defacing public spaces.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this known via the state government’s official X handle on Wednesday, stressing that deliberate environmental abuse would no longer be tolerated.
“From July 1, full enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics begins. Offenders who dump refuse illegally, litter streets, or degrade the environment will face serious consequences—ranging from hefty fines to jail time,” Wahab stated.
According to the Commissioner, over 3,000 violators have already been arrested, and the state is intensifying both surveillance and public awareness campaigns.
He also reaffirmed that the ban on cart pushers remains in effect, public defecation is prohibited, and illegal street trading will continue to be penalized.
“This is about safeguarding our environment—for ourselves and future generations. Let’s approach the upcoming Sallah with a renewed sense of cleanliness and civic responsibility,” Wahab urged.
He further advised residents to properly bag their waste and avoid dumping it in drains or road medians, emphasizing the importance of using assigned PSP waste operators.
“The time for change is now. We all share the responsibility of protecting our Lagos,” he concluded.
