Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, is now the 86th richest person in the world, with a net worth of $23.9 billion. This achievement follows the successful launch of his $20 billion Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos a year ago.

According to Forbes, Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest person, climbed from 144th to 86th globally, with his wealth rising from $13.4 billion to $23.9 billion. This increase is largely due to his 92.3% stake in the refinery.

At 67, Dangote is back in the top 100 richest people worldwide, a position he hasn’t held since 2018. This places him ahead of other African billionaires like South Africa’s Johann Rupert (161st with $14.4 billion) and Nigeria’s Mike Adenuga (481st with $6.8 billion).

Dangote’s rise is linked to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, the largest in Africa and one of the world’s largest, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day. It has disrupted Nigeria’s oil import market and is positioning the country for energy independence, reducing reliance on European refiners.

The refinery also includes a petrochemical complex producing 3 million metric tons of urea annually, making it Africa’s largest fertilizer producer. This strengthens Nigeria’s agricultural sector and reduces the continent’s dependence on imported fertilizers.

Beyond energy, the refinery has created thousands of jobs and boosted local infrastructure, attracting investments and contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth. Dangote is also committed to industrializing Nigeria and Africa, emphasizing the need for self-reliance. “We need to build our nation by ourselves and our continent, without relying on foreign investment,” he told Forbes.

The refinery was a huge risk for Dangote. “If this didn’t work, I was dead,” he admitted. But its success has solidified his reputation as a key African industrialist.

Zainab Usman, Director of the Africa Programme at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, noted that many Nigerians see Dangote as a hero for transforming the country’s industrial landscape. His success is inspiring a new generation of African entrepreneurs and solidifying his legacy as one of Africa’s most influential business leaders.
