Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, has ordered an investigation into allegations of criminal activities at the Okere Correctional Centre in Warri, Delta State.

A recent report claimed that prison officials accept bribes and allow inmates to leave the facility for criminal activities.

The report stated that a four-man prison gang recently traveled to Benin City, Edo, to commit a robbery before returning to their cells.

In a statement on Tuesday, Babatunde Alao, the minister’s spokesperson, quoted Tunji-Ojo condemning the alleged actions and emphasizing that any form of indiscipline and misconduct would face severe consequences.

“I will not allow indiscipline to fester under my nose. Any officer found wanting will face the full weight of the law. The leadership of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) must provide explanations,” he said.

“We take these allegations seriously and will not tolerate any form of misconduct within our correctional facilities.”

The minister reiterated his commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability in the administration of justice within the correctional service system.

He also urged the public to provide relevant information that may assist with the investigation.
