A 23-year-old woman, Mmesoma Umeorini, has allegedly been killed by her former boyfriend, Chima Ofoeke, in Uga, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, after she reportedly ended their relationship.
Ofoeke, who was arrested by the police over the suspected murder, allegedly confessed during preliminary interrogation that he killed Umeorini because she broke up with him.
According to the Anambra State Police Command, the suspect also allegedly led detectives to the location where the woman’s remains were discovered and recovered.
The incident came to light after the victim’s mother reported her daughter missing to the Divisional Police Officer of Umuchu Division, stating that she had not been seen since October 16, 2026, despite efforts to locate her.
Police operatives, acting on intelligence and working with members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga, subsequently arrested Ofoeke, who was identified as the deceased’s alleged former boyfriend.
The command’s spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Saturday.
In a video circulating on social media, the suspect was heard claiming that he killed the woman because she ended their relationship.
“I killed her because she broke up with me. I killed her in my house in Uga, put her inside a bag and dumped her somewhere,” he allegedly said during interrogation.
The video also showed the suspect reportedly leading security operatives to the location where the remains were found.
The incident was also brought to public attention by a social media influencer, Chuks, who alleged on X that Ofoeke killed the woman after she ended their relationship.
Reacting to the incident, a resident of the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, condemned the alleged killing and questioned how someone could claim to love another person yet allegedly resort to violence when the relationship ended.
The resident stressed that no one should be punished for choosing to leave a relationship, adding that women have the right to make decisions about their personal lives without fear of violence.
The resident also urged parents, friends and relatives to take threats, intimidation and controlling behaviour seriously, particularly when a former partner refuses to accept the end of a relationship.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Ama, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a thorough investigation.
The police said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
The command also urged members of the public to report missing-person cases and suspicious activities promptly to the appropriate authorities.
The suspect remains under investigation, and the allegations against him are yet to be determined by a court.
