Gunmen have killed four vigilantes guarding their community in Shurum village, Dorowa Babuje, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack reportedly occurred at about 11:56 p.m. on Friday while the victims were on duty protecting residents from security threats.
A community member, Bulus Bature, said the vigilantes were keeping watch when the assailants struck and killed them.
“They were watching over our community when the gunmen struck and killed them,” Bature said.
He described the incident as painful, noting that the victims had volunteered to protect their community but were killed while carrying out their responsibility.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, also confirmed the killings, saying the group had received reports of the attack.
“We received information about the attack and can confirm that four people were killed by the gunmen,” Tengwong said.
He condemned the incident and called on security agencies to investigate the killings and ensure that those responsible were brought to justice.
Tengwong expressed concern over the growing insecurity facing residents, warning that community members who volunteer to protect their neighbourhoods should not have to risk their lives without adequate security support.
He appealed to the government and relevant security agencies to strengthen security around affected communities to prevent further attacks.
Efforts to reach security operatives for official confirmation of the incident were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
