Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reportedly converted to Islam after reciting the Shahadah in Doha, Qatar.
The Al-Ahli defender was reported to have embraced Islam in Doha, where he currently plays for the Qatar Stars League club. Qatari newspaper Al-Arab reported the development on Wednesday.
The development was also shared by Islamic cleric Dr Muhammad Salah, who posted a video on his verified Facebook account showing Troost-Ekong reciting the Islamic declaration of faith.
Troost-Ekong, 33, moved to the Arab region in the summer of 2024 after joining Saudi Arabian club Al-Khaleej.
He later switched to Qatar, signing for Al-Ahli in January 2026 on a one-and-a-half-year contract. Since joining the club, the Nigerian defender has made 14 appearances across competitions, including one appearance in the current season.
On the international stage, Troost-Ekong earned 83 caps for Nigeria between 2015 and 2025, scoring eight goals.
He captained the Super Eagles to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was named the tournament’s best player.
The defender also represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, establishing himself as one of the country’s most experienced defenders of the past decade.
