President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, describing his 35 years of service as a legacy marked by excellence, professionalism and integrity.

In a goodwill message, the President recalled his first encounter with Egbetokun in 1998, noting that the retired police chief displayed remarkable character and competence from the outset.

Tinubu said Egbetokun distinguished himself across operational, investigative and administrative roles, evolving “from a promising officer into a refined, strategic leader.”

He commended the former IGP’s steady rise through the ranks, attributing it to his unwavering commitment to discipline, justice and national service.

The President further noted that Egbetokun’s tenure as head of the Nigeria Police Force brought stability and professionalism, particularly through initiatives aimed at strengthening institutions and promoting intelligence-driven policing.

According to Tinubu, the retired police chief also introduced key reforms that enhanced the force’s capacity to address emerging security challenges, thereby boosting public confidence in law enforcement.

Reflecting on his career, Egbetokun expressed gratitude to God, attributing his achievements to divine grace rather than personal effort.

“Today, I stand before God and His people, not to speak of achievement but to acknowledge grace,” he said, describing his appointment as IGP in 2023 as a manifestation of divine favour.

He also acknowledged the support of President Tinubu and traditional ruler, Oba Ebenezer Olufemi Alani Egunjobi, noting that their guidance significantly shaped his leadership journey.

“I remain eternally grateful,” he added.

On his retirement, Egbetokun said he was not stepping away from service entirely but transitioning into a new phase of life guided by faith and purpose.

“I do not merely retire; I transition under divine direction, with peace in my heart and joy in my spirit,” he stated.

His retirement marks the end of an era in the Nigeria Police Force, with stakeholders noting that his leadership helped entrench professionalism and set new standards in policing.
