A tragic accident occurred early Saturday morning along People’s Club/Limca Road in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, when a black Lexus SUV, allegedly driven by security operatives suspected to be DSS officials, collided with two tricycles (popularly known as Keke), killing one pedestrian on the spot and injuring several others.

The incident, which took place at approximately 6:30 a.m., caused widespread panic in the area. Eyewitnesses reported that the occupants of the two tricycles were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where some are said to be in critical condition.

According to an eyewitness who requested anonymity, about four men suspected to be DSS operatives were traveling at high speed in a convoy when their vehicle struck the tricycles. Upon realizing the severity of the crash — with one person already dead and others badly injured — the men reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene with their rifles, likely fearing a mob reaction.

“The Lexus was speeding when it hit the two tricycles,” the eyewitness recounted. “One person died instantly, while others were seriously injured. After the accident, the men jumped out with their rifles and ran away, leaving the vehicle behind.”

Photos taken at the scene showed the damaged tricycles and the abandoned SUV, as residents gathered in shock.

When contacted, Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident. He stated that police officers from Isiowulu Division responded swiftly, securing the area, recovering the abandoned Lexus SUV, and evacuating the victims to a hospital. One of the victims was later confirmed dead.

Ikenga also clarified that initial investigations revealed the vehicle is not registered to any security agency operating in the state, contradicting widespread speculation.

“The Anambra State Police Command has commenced a full investigation into the fatal motor accident. Preliminary findings indicate that the driver of the Lexus SUV rammed into two tricycles, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to several others,” Ikenga said. “The vehicle was abandoned, and the occupants fled. It has since been recovered by police operatives.”

He further disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered a comprehensive probe into the incident and appealed to residents of the area to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement authorities as the investigation continues.
