The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) community has been thrown into mourning following the reported suicide of a dental student shortly after the release of examination results.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Obafemi Awolowo University Dental Students’ Association (IFUDSA) confirmed the incident, describing it as a tragic loss to the Faculty of Dentistry.
“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues,” said IFUDSA President Adebayo Idris. “We have received the painful news that he took his own life shortly after the release of examination results.”
The association expressed condolences to the student’s family, friends, and classmates, while also acknowledging the deeper emotional toll such incidents can have on the wider student body.
“This loss is not just the departure of a promising young mind,” Idris stated, “but a painful reminder of the silent battles many students face.”
He urged students to seek support, whether from peers or professional mental health services, stressing the importance of mental well-being.
“We understand that this tragedy will leave many in shock, with questions and emotions that may be difficult to process,” Idris added. “We encourage all members of our faculty to reach out to one another, offer support, and seek professional help when needed. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should ever feel alone in their struggles.”
In closing, IFUDSA reaffirmed its commitment to improving student welfare and promoting mental health awareness to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
