Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has vowed to resign from the Federal Executive Council if President Bola Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State.
Wike made the declaration on Wednesday during an engagement with leaders and members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja.
The former Rivers State governor said he would personally take responsibility for Tinubu’s performance in the two territories, stressing that he would not remain in office if the President failed to secure victory there.
“If I cannot deliver where I work, then I’m not worthy to be here,” Wike said.
He added that he would announce his resignation on January 17, 2027, a day after the presidential election, if Tinubu lost both the FCT and Rivers State.
“If I lose FCT, I’m not supposed to be FCT Minister. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.
Wike also reaffirmed his support for Tinubu’s bid for another term, saying political groups in the FCT were working across party lines to mobilise support for the President.
According to him, the political coalition would also support selected candidates contesting legislative seats in the territory.
“Let us be clear on direction: for the Presidency, it is Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the minister said, while identifying former FCT Senator Philip Aduda and other candidates backed by the coalition.
Wike described the arrangement as a firm political agreement among the groups involved, saying the engagement with the mechanics and traders marked the final affirmation of the alliance.
The declaration places additional political significance on the FCT and Rivers State ahead of the 2027 presidential election, given Wike’s position as FCT minister and his previous tenure as governor of Rivers State.
His comments also came amid ongoing efforts by the FCT Administration to address issues involving the relocation and land allocation of traders and mechanics operating around the Apo Mechanic Village corridor.
The engagement, therefore, served both as a platform for discussions with the traders and an opportunity for Wike to reinforce the political alliance being built ahead of the 2027 elections.
