Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has approved a new minimum wage of N104,000 for civil servants in the state, up from the previous N76,000.

He announced during a meeting with labour union leaders on Tuesday night at the Government House, Owerri.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), other wage adjustments include: Doctors: From N215,000 to N503,000 while tertiary institution lecturers: From N119,000 to N222,000

The governor acknowledged the challenges faced by the state since 2020, including insecurity, the COVID-19 pandemic, economic reforms, and disputes over minimum wage and subsidy removal.

“When workers are paid well, productivity rises, families are happier, and the local economy grows. This is our way of investing in Imo people,” Uzodimma said.

He added that Imo’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has risen significantly from N400 million to over N3 billion monthly, while monthly federal allocation has increased from N5–7 billion to N14 billion. The state’s debt profile has reportedly dropped from N280 billion to under N100 billion.

Uzodimma said the government had invested heavily in rebuilding collapsed infrastructure, particularly roads and health facilities, and had embraced health insurance reforms to improve care.

On August 27, the state government will begin the final payment of ₦16 billion in gratuities owed to pensioners.

The governor also noted Imo’s participation in a federal project to establish 1,000 businesses in each active INEC ward, and called on labour unions to foster collaboration while discouraging unethical practices in the workplace.

In response, NLC State Chairman Uchechigemezu Nwigwe praised the wage increase, describing it as a “victory for the entire workforce.”

“Today, no worker in Imo will say you have not been fair to us,” he said, assuring the governor of workers’ renewed commitment to service.

TUC State Chairman Uchenna Ibe also commended Uzodimma’s political will and decisive action on workers’ welfare.
