The Executive Director, Social Services, Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Chief Favour O. Izoukumor, has felicitated with Nigerians at home and abroad as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Izoukumor, in a goodwill message to commemorate Nigeria’s Independence Day on October 1, described the attainment of independence in 1960 as one of the defining milestones in the nation’s history.
He honoured the memory of the nationalist leaders and patriots whose sacrifices, courage, and determination contributed to Nigeria’s emergence as an independent nation.
According to him, Nigeria has grown from a population of about 45 million at independence to more than 230 million people today, maintaining its position as the most populous black nation in the world and one of Africa’s leading countries.
He said the country’s ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity remained a significant part of its identity, stressing that such diversity should be harnessed as a source of strength rather than division.
Izoukumor also used the occasion to celebrate Delta State, describing it as a state richly endowed with oil and gas resources and one that has continued to make significant contributions to Nigeria’s economic development.
He said the people of Delta State, whom he described as resilient, industrious, hospitable, and enlightened, had continued to contribute meaningfully to the development of the state and the country at large.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s post-independence journey, Izoukumor acknowledged the challenges the country had faced, including economic difficulties, insecurity, political upheavals, and the complexities of nation-building.
He, however, noted that the resilience of Nigerians had remained unbroken despite the country’s difficult experiences, including the civil war and years of military rule.
According to him, Nigeria’s uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999 represents an important achievement that should be sustained and strengthened.
He called on Nigerians to renew their faith in the country and deepen their commitment to national unity, peace, justice, good governance, and shared prosperity.
Izoukumor urged citizens to work towards building a Nigeria where every person, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, or social circumstances, would have access to opportunities, dignity, and a sense of belonging.
He expressed hope that the Nigerian flag would continue to symbolise unity, resilience, peace, and hope for a prosperous future.
He also prayed that the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers and other national heroes would continue to inspire present and future generations.
Izoukumor concluded by wishing Nigerians a happy 66th Independence Anniversary and declared: “Long Live Delta State! Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
