Solomon Arase, Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police, has reportedly passed away at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja.
Appointed in April 2015 by then-President Goodluck Jonathan, Arase served as IGP until his retirement in 2016. He continued to contribute to national service in various capacities, most recently as Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC)—a role he assumed in January 2023 under President Muhammadu Buhari. He was relieved of the position in June 2024 by President Bola Tinubu.
A seasoned and distinguished intelligence officer, Arase once led the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the premier intelligence unit of the Nigeria Police Force. His career also included key leadership roles, including Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State and Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of intelligence.
Beyond his domestic service, Arase also represented Nigeria on the international stage, notably serving in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Namibia.
As of the time of reporting, neither his family nor the Nigeria Police Force has released an official statement confirming his death.
