There was mild drama at the National Assembly on Wednesday when representatives of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) walked out during a session with the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies.
The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, was absent and had delegated a Director, Mufutau Bello, to represent him at the meeting.
Trouble began when Bello asked journalists covering the proceedings to leave the room, claiming that the documents he intended to present contained sensitive information.
However, members of the Committee rejected the request, insisting that their proceedings were public and that the House was constitutionally empowered to determine the mode of its sittings.
The disagreement quickly escalated when Bello, visibly upset, ordered his team to leave the venue and walked out of the session, leaving lawmakers in shock.
Angered by the action, the Committee directed the Sergeant-at-Arms to arrest the JAMB officials, but they had already left the National Assembly premises.
The Committee has now summoned the JAMB Registrar to appear in person with his management team and all relevant documents next Tuesday.
Failure to comply, the Committee warned, could lead to the issuance of a warrant of arrest against the JAMB boss.
