The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Monday confirmed that at least 19 people lost their lives and eight others sustained injuries in a tragic road accident that occurred on Sunday along the Lokoja-Obajana road.
State Sector Commander Mr. Kumar Tsukwam disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja.
According to Tsukwam, the survivors suffered various injuries, including bruises, cuts, fractures, dislocations, and burns.
The fatal crash took place around 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Gadabiu community in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State.
He revealed that among the 19 victims who were burned to death were five children.
The accident involved a Toyota Hummer bus traveling from the South to Abuja and an articulated truck. Tsukwam explained that the bus, which was reportedly speeding, attempted to overtake another truck but collided head-on with an oncoming articulated vehicle, leaving no room to avoid the impact.
“It was very unfortunate because it was caused by speeding and wrongful overtaking and involved 27 persons with only eight survivors.
“Our rescue operation team and the police were able to rescue the eight survivors and rushed them to Fisayo Hospital, Obajana for immediate medical attention.”
The commander emphasized that highways are not meant for racing and urged motorists to refrain from speeding and dangerous overtaking.
He further encouraged drivers to consistently adhere to traffic rules and regulations, noting that doing so would support both the corps and the federal government in their efforts to reduce road accidents and fatalities nationwide.
