The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in a joint operation with the Nigerian Army and Navy, has discovered an illegal artisanal refinery and unlicensed petrol station in Anambra State.
The illicit facility was located at Y-Junction, Nkwelle Ezunaka, in the Oyi Local Government Area of the State.
In a statement released on Sunday in Awka by SC Edwin Okadigbo, Head of Media, NSCDC State Commandant Mr. Olatunde Maku confirmed the operation, stating it was based on credible intelligence about illegal petroleum activities in the area.
“At approximately 1:35 p.m. on Saturday, our team raided the site and arrested one suspect, while others managed to escape,” Maku said.
Recovered items from the site included 49 kegs (25 liters each) suspected to contain adulterated Automotive Gas Oil, four 200-liter drums of suspected adulterated Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), and a pumping machine. The arrested suspect has been transferred to the NSCDC for prosecution.
Maku reiterated the Corps’ dedication to eliminating illegal petroleum operations in the state and thanked the Nigerian Navy and Army for their vital support during the raid.
He issued a stern warning to those operating illegal refineries or posing as representatives of oil sector entities, urging them to leave Anambra or face the consequences.
“We are closely tracking individuals and groups engaged in covert or open criminal activities within the oil and gas sector,” Maku stated. “The Command remains determined to escalate enforcement efforts statewide.”
He also assured the public and security partners that a full investigation is underway to ensure all suspects, including those still at large, are prosecuted.
“Our collaboration with other security agencies underscores our shared commitment to combating crime in Anambra,” he added. “As the lead agency against illegal petroleum dealings and profiteering, the NSCDC will continue to expose and bring economic saboteurs to justice.”
