An Abeokuta High Court on Wednesday sentenced 22-year-old Jamiu Malomo to death by hanging for killing a sex worker identified as Asisat Akande.

The incident happened on July 18, 2021, at about 9:30pm at Ori-Apata community, Oke-Aregba, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Malomo who was 18 years old when the incident occurred pleaded not guilty to the charge and was convicted on a one-count charge of murderMalomo reportedly stabbed the deceased to death with a knife after a misunderstanding following his refusal to pay his balance of N2,000 ensued.

The state prosecuting counsel, Mr. A.M Adebayo, Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, told the court that the convict picked Asisat Akande, the deceased, who is a sex worker, from a bar in the Panseke area and took her to his house for sexual pleasure.

“After having carnal knowledge of the deceased, she demanded N10,000, which was their agreement, but he refused to give her the complete money, saying he had N8,000.

“The situation led to an argument between him and the deceased, which made the convict bring out a knife from his pocket and stab her in the neck.

“The stab resulted in the instant death of the deceased,” he said.

The prosecutor noted that the convict was arrested by men of the police at the 3AD club in Panseke, where he wanted to pick another girl for sexual pleasure.

He noted that his offense contravened the provisions of Section 316 and was punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun 2006.

Delivering judgment, Justice O. Ogunfowora convicted Malomo, holding that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt that he was guilty of the offense as charged.

The judge held that the evidence presented by the prosecution was tenable and, therefore, sentenced Malomo to death by hanging.

He said, “You are hereby guilty of killing Asisat Akande as preferred against you. You will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on you.”
