An expert in robotics and embedded systems, Dr Onyema Edward, has called for the effective deployment of robotic technology in all sectors of Nigeria to tackle issues and to positively impact humanity as well as the environment. In a statement in Uyo on Monday.

Edward, who was recently conferred with the title of Chartered Engineer from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, said effective use of robotics would influence the way Nigerians live, work, and interact while improving the economy.

Highlighting the impact of robotics on security, agriculture, health, education, and transportation, among others, Edward said the government should maximize the technology for a secure future and environment.

According to him, “Robotics has transformed the healthcare industry by enabling the development of advanced medical devices, such as robotic surgery systems, prosthetic limbs, and exoskeletons.

“These innovations have improved patient outcomes, reduced recovery times, and enhanced the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.”

He also said robotic technology would make education more engaging, interactive, and accessible, assist teachers in providing personalized learning experiences, and help students develop essential skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Edwards said deployment of robotic technology in agriculture would increase efficiency and productivity by enabling the use of autonomous farming equipment, such as drones and robotic tractors adding that such improves crop yields, reduces waste, and enhances food security.

On security, the expert said through intelligent robotic machines and systems, whereby human engagement in fighting in person is minimized, there would be a drastic reduction of casualties in various security applications, such as border patrol, surveillance, and search and rescue operations.

On hotel management and tourism, Edwards said robotics are being used to provide personalized services to guests, such as automated check-in and check-out, room service, and concierge services.

He said, “Overall, the deployment of robotics, automation, and intelligent systems in Nigeria has been steadily increasing since 2019, with various sectors benefiting from the introduction of these technologies.”
