A petroleum tanker has overturned and burst into flames opposite the Odukpani Local Government Secretariat in Cross River State, killing one person, injuring another and destroying several shops and vehicles.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, causing panic among residents and commuters in the area.
The tanker driver, who was reportedly trapped inside the vehicle after it overturned, was rescued and taken to a medical facility for treatment.
The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah.
According to the tpolice, preliminary findings indicated that the tanker, which was loaded with petroleum products, was involved in a road accident before overturning and catching fire.
“Preliminary information available to the Command indicates that a tanker truck conveying petroleum product was involved in a road traffic accident and overturned in the process, resulting in the fire which has spread to nearby shops and buildings,” the statement said.
The police spokesperson initially said no death had been recorded, but a subsequent update confirmed that one person had died while another sustained serious injuries.
“As at the time of filing this report, one death has been confirmed. Another person was also seriously injured. Also, a number of shops and vehicles have reportedly been affected by the fire,” Eitokpah said.
He added that the tanker driver, who was caught in the flames, was rescued and rushed to a hospital for medical attention.
Following the incident, officers from the Odukpani Divisional Police Headquarters were deployed to the scene to maintain law and order, secure the area and prevent further casualties.
The police also said the Fire Service had been alerted and was expected to deploy personnel and equipment to contain the blaze.
The Command urged residents, motorists and passers-by to stay away from the affected area to allow emergency responders to operate without obstruction.
“The Command urges members of the public to stay away from the immediate area and allow emergency responders unhindered access to the scene,” Eitokpah said.
The police said further updates would be provided as more verified information becomes available.
