The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), Professor Ezekiel Agbalagba, has confirmed the death of a 100-level student who was allegedly stabbed to death by his elder brother, also a student of the institution.
The incident reportedly occurred around 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Hostel C on the university campus.
Although details surrounding the incident were still emerging at the time of filing this report, sources said the two brothers had been involved in a longstanding disagreement, which reportedly culminated in a dispute over a pair of bathroom slippers.
The suspect, identified only as Joshua, was alleged to have invited his younger brother to the rear of the hostel to resolve the matter. However, the meeting reportedly turned violent, with the suspect allegedly stabbing the victim multiple times with a dagger before fleeing the scene.
Witnesses said the injured student, despite suffering severe wounds, managed to crawl from the scene of the attack to another section of the hostel, where fellow students found him and raised the alarm.
Images circulating on social media showed the victim lying in a pool of blood while being attended to by other students.
Professor Agbalagba described the incident as tragic and disclosed that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the suspect and hand him over to law enforcement authorities.
“It was a misunderstanding between two brothers of the same mother and father. We are making efforts to locate the young man who committed this heinous act and hand him over to the police. As of now, we are still searching for him,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
He added that the situation on campus remained under control and assured students, parents and members of the university community that the institution was working closely with relevant authorities.
“The campus is calm, and the university management is on top of the situation,” he said.
As of press time, it was unclear whether the parents of the deceased student had been formally notified of the incident.
The suspect remains at large, while efforts to track him down continue.
