Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has reaffirmed that democracy remains the most suitable system of government for Nigeria, describing it as the best framework for managing the country’s ethnic, religious and cultural diversity while promoting national unity and development.

In a goodwill message marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Fubara said June 12 represents more than a historic date in Nigeria’s political history, noting that it symbolises the sacrifices, resilience and aspirations of Nigerians in their quest for freedom, justice and representative governance.

The governor congratulated Nigerians at home and in the diaspora and paid tribute to the heroes of the democratic struggle, particularly the late Chief MKO Abiola, his wife, Kudirat Abiola, and other patriots whose sacrifices contributed to the restoration of democratic rule in the country.

According to him, June 12 serves as a reminder of the price paid for the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today and highlights the enduring principle that political power must ultimately reside with the people.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey 33 years after the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, Fubara acknowledged that the nation has faced several challenges but said the resilience of democratic institutions and the determination of citizens have sustained progress.

He noted that the freedom to express differing opinions, engage in constructive debate and elect leaders through the ballot box remains one of the country’s greatest achievements.

The governor stressed that Nigeria’s diversity should be viewed as a strength rather than a weakness, adding that democracy provides an avenue for consensus-building, inclusion and sustainable development.

Fubara also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for pursuing the Renewed Hope Agenda and efforts aimed at economic revitalisation, improved security and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

He reiterated the Rivers State Government’s commitment to working with the Federal Government in implementing policies and programmes that enhance citizens’ welfare through infrastructure development, job creation, quality education, healthcare delivery, improved security and good governance.

The governor further urged Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity or religion, to use the occasion of Democracy Day to renew their commitment to national unity and democratic values.

He emphasised that democracy should not be seen merely as an electoral process but as a daily commitment to accountability, transparency, tolerance, justice, respect for the rule of law and responsible leadership.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Onwuka Nzeshi, Fubara expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future and called on citizens to remain united, hopeful and committed to the ideals of peace, dialogue and national development.

He said with collective effort and dedication, Nigerians can build a stronger, more inclusive and prosperous nation where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive and contribute meaningfully to national progress.
