The Nigerian Army has announced the discovery of suspected remains of two soldiers allegedly abducted and killed by members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in 2022.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the army said the remains, believed to be those of Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew, were uncovered during a military operation in Imo State.
According to the statement, the troops of the 82 Division, working alongside other security agencies, dismantled a notorious IPOB/ESN camp along the Ubaha Orsu axis in Orsu Local Government Area on April 24, 2026, following actionable intelligence.
The operation, described as part of a broader clearance mission, was aimed at dismantling criminal hideouts in the South-East and locating the remains of the two personnel who were reportedly abducted and murdered in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.
The army disclosed that troops encountered heavy resistance during the operation but successfully repelled multiple ambushes and forced the attackers to retreat.
Following the clearance of the camp, a detailed search led to the discovery of shallow graves suspected to contain the remains of the slain soldiers. The graves were subsequently excavated, and the remains recovered.
Military authorities said the remains have been secured for forensic examination, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities. Efforts are also underway to contact the families of the deceased for proper identification and burial arrangements.
The army noted that the operation highlights its commitment to bringing justice to fallen personnel and dismantling criminal networks in the region. It added that ongoing operations would continue until peace and security are fully restored.
The military also urged residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies with credible information, reaffirming its resolve to protect the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
