The Nigeria Police Force in Rivers State has dissolved its tactical teams as part of a restructuring effort aimed at improving operational efficiency and professionalism.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, disclosed this on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, noting that the move followed a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

According to Agabe, the disbanded tactical teams have been merged into a newly created unit known as the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), which is tasked with responding swiftly to incidents of violent crime while upholding established rules of engagement and respecting fundamental human rights.

She explained that the restructuring is designed to enhance coordination in police operations and boost public confidence in law enforcement across the state.

Agabe also quoted the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, as warning officers against extortion, abuse of office, and other forms of misconduct, stressing that any violation of the force’s code of conduct would attract disciplinary action.

Adepoju reassured residents of the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging the public to cooperate with security agencies and report suspicious activities or unprofessional behaviour.

He reiterated the command’s resolve to promote effective, accountable, and people-centred policing throughout the state.
