A medical practitioner, Dr Ere Ogbachi, has died after developing complications shortly after giving birth to triplets in Bayelsa State.
Her family confirmed the incident in a statement signed by her brother, Meshack Sintei, and shared on Wednesday, stating that she passed away at about 2:45 a.m. on Tuesday at the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa, where she had been receiving intensive care.
Dr Ogbachi, a registrar at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), was said to have delivered the triplets successfully at the hospital in Okolobiri before her condition worsened, necessitating an emergency transfer to the Intensive Care Unit of the Federal Medical Centre.
According to the family, complications arose shortly after delivery, prompting urgent medical intervention. Despite efforts by doctors and medical personnel to stabilise her, her condition deteriorated rapidly.
The statement described her final moments as distressing, noting that her oxygen levels dropped significantly during treatment while medical staff made attempts to revive her.
Sintei, who described the loss as devastating, said the family is deeply grieved by her passing, recalling her as a dedicated doctor and a new mother who fought until the end.
Dr Ogbachi was also a member of the Nigerian Medical Association and a graduate of the Niger Delta University.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities at the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
