Suspected terrorists have launched a fresh attack on the Jol community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing a 51-year-old man, Dalyop Betobeje, in the early hours of Friday.

The assailants, believed to have come from the Rankum (Mahanga) area, reportedly struck at about 6:56 a.m., in what local leaders described as a direct challenge to ongoing peace efforts in the state.

The latest incident followed closely on the heels of another deadly attack in Heipang District of Bassa Local Government Area. Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen had on Wednesday night invaded Ban village around 9 p.m., killing a secondary school student, Gloria Godwin, injuring several others, and destroying property.

Security sources confirmed the Riyom attack, noting that police had commenced investigations and were making efforts to apprehend those responsible.

The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), in a statement, condemned the violence, describing it as a “brutal and senseless act” that reflects the persistent insecurity confronting communities in Plateau State. The group expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Chairman of BYM in Heipang District, Jacob Pam Chall, commended the prompt response of security operatives but called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators.

He stressed the need for sustained security efforts to ensure justice and restore confidence among residents, adding that communities deserve safety and lasting peace.

The association also urged residents to remain calm and united, encouraging stronger cooperation with security agencies and increased local vigilance.

The renewed violence comes just days after President Bola Tinubu visited Plateau State, where he assured victims and residents of the Federal Government’s resolve to end the cycle of killings and restore peace.

“I promise you this experience will not repeat itself,” the President had said while sympathising with affected families.

However, the latest attacks in Riyom and Bassa have raised fresh concerns about the effectiveness of ongoing security measures, underscoring the urgent need for decisive and sustained interventions.

Plateau State has recently witnessed a resurgence of violent attacks, particularly in rural communities, heightening fears among residents and posing a significant test to government efforts to maintain peace.
