The Rivers State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the killing of a woman following an attack by suspected armed hoodlums in Port Harcourt.
The incident occurred on March 19, 2026, and was reported two days later at about 4:30 p.m. by Divine Anyanwu at the Abuloma Police Division.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, the victims—Anyanwu and her friend, identified as Special Bensington—had boarded a Bolt ride from a hotel on Emmanuel Road, off Odili Road, before the attack.
According to the police, the victims were trailed and ambushed along the Total Gospel area, also off Odili Road, by gunmen operating a tricycle. The assailants reportedly opened fire on them, leaving one of the occupants critically injured.
The injured victim was rushed to BMH Hospital in Port Harcourt for treatment but was later confirmed dead by a doctor on duty on March 21.
Iringe-Koko said the Divisional Police Officer of Abuloma Division led a team to the scene and the hospital as part of preliminary investigations, adding that the deceased has been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy.
She further disclosed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for detailed forensic investigation, with efforts ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
The Police Command condemned the killing, describing it as heinous, and assured residents that those responsible would be brought to justice. It also urged members of the public to come forward with useful information to assist ongoing investigations.
