Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will mark his final appearance on the global stage, signaling the approaching end of an illustrious career spanning more than two decades.

The 40-year-old Portuguese forward announced a video at a global tourism and investment forum in Saudi Arabia, where he was asked whether he would play beyond the next World Cup.

“Definitely, yes. I’m going to be 41 years old, and I think it will be the moment,” Ronaldo said with a smile. Jokingly, he added, “Soon for me means in 10 years… No, I’m joking.”

Despite his age, Ronaldo emphasized that he still feels physically sharp and mentally driven. “I feel very good at this moment. I score goals, and I still feel quick and sharp. But let’s be honest — what I mean by soon is probably one or two years,” he said.

Ronaldo, who has scored over 950 career goals, reflected on his journey with pride, particularly since joining Saudi club Al Nassr in 2023.
“I gave everything for football. I’ve been in the game for the last 25 years. I did everything — I have many records in different scenarios at clubs and also with the national team. I’m really proud. So let’s enjoy the moment, live the moment,” he said.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also shared a personal note about his son, Cristiano Jr., who currently plays for Portugal’s U-16 team.
“As human beings, we don’t always want anyone to be better than us. But I wish my kids would be better than me… Be happy, be free. Don’t be under the pressure of your daddy. I will be his support,” Ronaldo said.

If he features in the 2026 tournament, Ronaldo will become one of the few players in history to appear in six World Cups. His closest attempt to lift the trophy came in 2006, when Portugal reached the semi-finals.

Portugal can secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup with a win over Ireland this week — a step closer to what could be Ronaldo’s final dance on football’s biggest stage.
