The Federal Government has declared Friday, September 5, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate Eid-ul-Mawlid — the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The announcement was made on Wednesday via a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

In the statement, the government extended its congratulations to Muslims across the country and in the diaspora, encouraging them to reflect on and emulate the Prophet’s virtues of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion.

It further urged all Nigerians, regardless of religious affiliation, to use the occasion to pray for peace, security, and stability in the nation, and to support ongoing efforts aimed at fostering national unity and development.

“The Minister of Interior wishes Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration,” the statement read.

“The celebration of Eid-ul-Mawlid offers us yet another opportunity to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, promote peaceful coexistence, and imbibe the Prophet’s teachings of mutual respect and selfless service to humanity.”

The government also appealed to citizens to remain law-abiding and security-conscious, while actively supporting policies aimed at achieving sustainable development and national cohesion.

Eid-ul-Mawlid, which falls in the third month of the Islamic calendar, Rabi’ al-Awwal, commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad and is observed through prayers, sermons, community gatherings, and charitable acts.

In Nigeria, the day is officially recognized as a national holiday, reflecting both the country’s significant Muslim population and its commitment to honoring major religious observances.

The celebration often serves as a platform for religious leaders and government officials to advocate for peace, unity, and social responsibility — particularly crucial in light of Nigeria’s ongoing security and economic challenges.
