Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, has appointed actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as the spokesperson for his presidential campaign.

The appointment comes weeks after Okonkwo publicly criticised the selection of Rotimi Amaechi as the ADC’s vice-presidential candidate, arguing that choosing a running mate from the South-South would further deny the South-East an opportunity to produce Nigeria’s president.

He had maintained that the South-East had remained excluded from the presidency since 1999 and warned that the development could deepen what he described as the continued marginalisation of the region.

Confirming the appointment, Atiku’s spokesman, Paul Ibe, said the decision was made by the former vice president.

Announcing his appointment on his social media platforms, Okonkwo thanked Atiku for the confidence reposed in him, describing the appointment as a reflection of the former vice president’s democratic credentials.

According to him, rather than take offence at differing opinions, Atiku chose dialogue and compromise to address concerns raised by his associates.

Okonkwo said discussions held with Atiku and other leaders of the ADC focused on the interests of the South-East, adding that assurances were given within the constraints of the Electoral Act, 2026, and prevailing political realities.

He also expressed appreciation to Kashim Imam for his intervention and counsel, saying it demonstrated that the emerging political movement had room for Nigerians regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, or region.

The former presidential aspirant further commended Ralphs Nwosu for his role in strengthening the ADC and acknowledged the efforts of Ekene Onwuka in assembling the campaign team ahead of the 2027 general election.

Okonkwo also thanked his family, friends, and supporters for their encouragement and prayers, while seeking continued support as he assumes his new role.

“I still covet your prayers for wisdom, courage, provision, and protection needed to carry out this challenging post which will usher in a glorious and great Nigeria,” he said.
