No fewer than 15 members of the Jehovah’s Witness congregation lost their lives on Monday evening in a fatal crash at Awomama Bridge, Imo State.
The accident, which occurred around 6:45 p.m., happened when a trailer driving against traffic rammed into a bus conveying worshippers from Agwa community, Oguta LGA.
The victims were returning from the annual Jehovah’s Witness Assembly Convention in Uli, Anambra State. All passengers in the bus reportedly died on the spot, and their remains have been deposited in a morgue.
Reacting to the tragedy, Chairman of Oguta LGA, Hon. Ifeanyi Nnani, described the incident as a “dark and sorrowful moment” for the community, consoling families of the deceased and praying for God’s comfort.
Also, the Mazi Progressive Network (MPN) and Renaissance Oguta Constituency (ROC) expressed grief in separate condolence messages, urging both federal and state governments to urgently address the poor state of roads in Imo to avert future tragedies.
