Tragedy struck on Sunday, May 11, 2025, on the Eko Bridge, inward the Alaka corridor, when two dispatch riders from Okiszriders lost their lives in a fatal collision involving two fully loaded Mack trucks.

Preliminary findings reveal that one of the articulated trucks, bearing registration number T-10357 LA, was reportedly speeding when its driver, suspected to have fallen asleep at the wheel, lost control and crashed into another moving truck with registration number KHA107 XM.

The force of the collision caused a 20-foot container to detach from one of the trucks, fatally crushing the two dispatch riders who were traveling along the same route. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officers stationed beneath the bridge responded promptly. They assisted in rescuing a critically injured truck driver, who was rushed to a nearby hospital by a Lagos State Government ambulance.

According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, both truck drivers reportedly fled the scene following the incident.

In response, the affected stretch of the bridge was cordoned off, and traffic was diverted through the Coastain Roundabout toward Alaka and Stadium to ease congestion.

Expressing condolences, LASTMA General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki stressed the importance of safe and responsible driving, especially by operators of heavy-duty vehicles. He urged drivers to remain vigilant, avoid fatigue, and ensure vehicle roadworthiness before setting out.

He also reiterated LASTMA’s dedication to enhancing road safety awareness through ongoing education and advocacy campaigns.

Other agencies present at the scene included the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), and officers from the Iponri Police Division.
