PSG players celebrate after winning the UEFA Champions League final

Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title after overcoming Arsenal 2-1 on penalties following a gripping 1-1 draw that remained unresolved after 120 minutes of intense action.

The French champions demonstrated the resilience and composure of a team determined to cement its place among Europe’s elite, recovering from an early setback before prevailing in a dramatic shootout that crowned them champions once again.

Arsenal made a dream start to the final, stunning the holders just six minutes into the contest. Kai Havertz capitalised on a defensive mistake, racing into the penalty area before unleashing a powerful strike beneath the crossbar and beyond goalkeeper Matvey Safonov to hand the Gunners an early lead.

The goal injected confidence into Arsenal’s play, but PSG gradually regained control of proceedings. Driven by the creativity of Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Vitinha, the Parisians began to dominate possession and dictate the tempo of the match.

Despite their growing influence, clear-cut opportunities remained limited during the first half. Fabian Ruiz came closest to finding an equaliser, while Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya was rarely called upon to make a decisive save as Mikel Arteta’s side maintained its narrow advantage heading into the break.

PSG emerged from the dressing room with renewed purpose and increased intensity. Their persistence was rewarded in the 65th minute when a Video Assistant Referee review resulted in a penalty after Cristhian Mosquera was adjudged to have committed a foul inside the area.

Dembele stepped forward and calmly dispatched the spot-kick into the bottom corner, giving Raya no chance and bringing the reigning champions level at 1-1.

The equaliser transformed the contest into an enthralling battle. PSG relentlessly searched for a winner, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia striking the post and Vitinha narrowly missing the target with a fierce long-range effort.

Arsenal remained dangerous on the counterattack and introduced Viktor Gyökeres, Gabriel Martinelli and Eberechi Eze in an effort to regain the initiative. However, neither side could find a decisive breakthrough before the end of regulation time, forcing the final into extra time.

As fatigue began to affect both teams, chances became increasingly scarce during the additional 30 minutes. Arsenal came agonisingly close to snatching victory in the closing stages when Martin Zubimendi found space inside the area, only for a PSG defender to produce a vital block that preserved the deadlock.

With neither side able to separate itself after two hours of football, the Champions League trophy would be decided by penalties.

The shootout delivered further drama. Goncalo Ramos and Desire Doue successfully converted for PSG, while Viktor Gyökeres and Declan Rice responded for Arsenal.

The pivotal moment arrived when Safonov produced a crucial save to deny Eberechi Eze. Although Raya briefly reignited Arsenal’s hopes by stopping Nuno Mendes’ effort, Achraf Hakimi restored PSG’s advantage with a composed finish.

Gabriel Martinelli converted to keep Arsenal alive, but Lucas Beraldo calmly slotted home PSG’s next penalty, leaving Gabriel with the responsibility of extending the shootout.

The Arsenal defender failed to convert, triggering jubilant celebrations among PSG players, staff and supporters as the French giants sealed another European triumph.

The victory secured back-to-back Champions League titles for Paris Saint-Germain and further strengthened their reputation as one of the dominant forces in modern European football, while Arsenal were left to reflect on a valiant effort that fell agonisingly short on the biggest stage.
